Next Year in Jerusalem: Portraits of the Jew in the Twentieth Century (A Studio Book)
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (March, 1976)
Average review score:

Outstanding essaysErudite, beautifully written essays by outstanding writers like George Steiner, Walter Laqueur, Leo Rosten, Harry Golden and Stephen Aris do much to illuminate the nature of Jewish contributions to the twentieth century in commerce, the arts, etc. The astonishing awful chapter by the brilliant but eccentric Arthur Koestler does not mar the achievement of this book. Wisely, there are no attempts to present an overgeneralized, mystical Jewish "essence" in these pages but rather concrete, yet thoughtful middle-ground perspectives on what is and is not distinctively Jewish about the achievements detailed here. An oversized volume with many black and white photos.

The Night Comes On
Published in Hardcover by Ash-Tree Press (30 March, 1998)
Average review score:

Expert PastichesSteve Duffy has done a brilliant job of producing stories that have the genuine atmosphere and "feel" of the classic English ghost stories from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. If you're a fan of the classic tales of M.R. James, and feel pangs that there are not *more* stories by Monty, Duffy offers delightful consolation. Duffy (as he explains in fascinating notes on the stories at the end of the volume) works hard to maintain the subtlety and refinement of the classic ghost story (some readers may feel that some of the tales might be a bit *too* restrained). But he can also let the spectres rip, as a story like "Figures on a Hillside" shows. For my money, Duffy is right to aim for restraint: his stories put a premium on atmosphere and the careful, subtle build-up of dread and suspense. I've read all of them more than once, and I know this is a book I'll enjoy throughout my life. And, as virtually all of the Ash-Tree limited edition books are, this is a beautiful and beautifully-made book.

Nightmare House

Alive and Not Close to DyingThis is the first book to pick up before "MISCHIEF" & "INFINITE".
A Diary of the man who constructed from the very ground up, this Mansion of Mayhem and Horror. Evil lurks in the most mysterious room of HARLOW. If there is one way in, there is another very well hidden. Murder, Family, Life, Untold Secrets. The History of Harlow is this book.
And what you uncover in every chapter is just amazing. Don't let this book slip by your hands.

No Easy Days: The Incredible Drama of Naval Aviation
Published in Paperback by Butler Books, Inc. ()
Average review score:

A breathtaking display of carrier aviationThe photogarphy in this book is so vivid, it demands your full attention to the plight of those pilots and crewmen involved in the incidents depicted and described. One can almost hear the voices and feel the heat of the fires often encountered in mishaps of this nature. I found it a one-sitting, hold-your-breath sort of presentation. I've returned often to absorb those photos and to try to imagine what led up to each of the awesome and sometimes gruesome events. Having been a Navy pilot for over two decades with carrier experience; some in the beloved F6F-5 Hellcat, I find myself feeling a very close kinship with those in this perfectly outstanding book. Many kudos to Mssrs, Keeney and Butler for putting together a very much needed reminder that in carrier aviation there are, indeed, No Easy Days.

Nonlinear Regression Analysis and Its Applications
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (August, 1988)
Average review score:

excellent and practical text on nonlinear regressionAlong with Gallant's book on nonlinear regression this book is one of the best. It is on an intermediate level and assumes some knowledge of linear regression. Notable unique aspects of the book are (1) good use of geometry, (2) discussion of derivative free methods, (3) use of profile likelihood and profile t plots and (4) measures of degree of nonlinearity of the problem. The authors also provide many real world applications directly from their consulting experience.
These authors were among the researchers that developed these measures of nonlinearity and so that aspect of the book is original and is emphasized in this book more than in others such as Gallant's.

North American Indians
Published in Paperback by Random House (Merchandising) (April, 1978)
Average review score:

North American IndianI bought this book a few years ago for my kids. Recently, my son was doing a report on Apache Indians. I was amazed to find that an original photo I found on the internet matched the book illustration quite well. Everything in the book matched and sometimes exceeded all of the information that my son had on various Indian tribes. A simple, beautifully done introduction to American Indians for children!! I am going to buy a few more copies to give to my son's school library.

North Dakota Place Names
Published in Hardcover by Hedemarken Collectibles (November, 1988)
Average review score:

FabulousIf you like to know the history of placenames, this is a great book. I lived in North Dakota for 15 years and first heard about such a field of study from Greek teacher at the University of North Dakota. This book, written by an amatuer, is clearly a labor of love and the definitive one in its field. All the minutiae are in it. Good job all around. And the pictures are wonderful.

Northwoods Cradle Song: From a Menominee Lullaby
Published in Paperback by Aladdin Library (August, 1998)
Average review score:

A Beautiful Bedtime BookIn Northwoods Cradle Song, a person can find three things that make a book especially appealing to me: a love and respect for nature, poetic text, and beautiful artwork. Everything works well here to create a book that is a joy to read to the children who matter in our lives.
